17 - Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing of Large Safety-CriticalComponents in the Nuclear Industry: Influence of Deposition Rate in the Submerged Arc Process

Abstract

The manufacturing of large components for nuclear industry is challenging in many ways. On one hand, chemical composition management can become an issue, owing to the alloying elements segregation during the solidification of the primary ingot. On the other hand, lead times due to the multiple steps required to transform the large ingot into the finish product can also be regarded as a challenging step for maintenance and availability under unplanned events. In an attempt to mitigate these issues, this paper investigates a novel approach for the manufacturing of large and chemically homogeneous components using highly productive additive manufacturing processes. The process used in this study is the Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) process applied to the Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology, enabling deposition rates up to 45 kg/h. Multiple low alloy steel multipass walls have been manufactured using different deposition rates, between 15 and 45 kg/h, in order to understand the influence of the latter on both material’s microstructure and mechanical properties. Macroscopic observations have been undertaken in order to evaluate the material integrity after manufacturing as well as the influence of the deposition rate on the morphology of the weld beads. In a second step, microstructural analyses have been performed, to determine the as-built microstructure in the different areas of the welds, as well as chemical analysis, to evaluate the chemical homogeneity of the parts. Mechanical testing (tensile, impact toughness) has been done to investigate the influence of both the deposition rate and the microstructure on the manufactured components.
