58 - Additive Manufacturing of nuclear Fuel Assembly metallic components - overview of Machine/Process qualification strategy

Abstract

Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metallic components has gained considerable attention in the past few years in the nuclear industry. Indeed, the different AM technologies are versatile, allow for more complex and efficient designs and can lead to significant gains in the global manufacturing supply chain compared to conventional manufacturing routes. However, as AM processes are relatively new, one of the key challenges is to develop a robust machine/process qualification strategy before moving to serial production, especially for sensitive applications such as components for the nuclear industry. In this paper a global overview of the opportunities for AM with the laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) technique for nuclear Fuel Assembly metallic components is presented. Then, a short overview of requirements from international standards for AM machine/process multi-step qualification is highlighted and their influence on the definition of Framatome’s global strategy for qualification is highlighted. Finally, first technical qualification results obtained on alloy 316L (tensile, Charpy V-notch, microstructure, porosity) are put forward and briefly discussed based by comparing with results from the literature.
