18 - Laser powder bed fusion process development for copper-aluminium alloys : towards spare parts for the railway infrastructures

Abstract

In recent years, the railway industry has been confronted with challenges regarding the replacement of obsolete components, especially within catenary systems. Those components made of copper-aluminum alloys are expensive to machine and additive manufacturing might be a good alternative manufacturing method. The current study investigates laser powder bed fusion of such materials, specifically CuAl10Fe5Ni5. This alloy is a viable candidate for the replacement of worn-out catenary parts for the French railway company SNCF Réseau. A design of experiments approach is used to develop optimal processing parameters. Through material characterization, density is analyzed and mechanical testing confirms that the material’s strength and ductility levels are compliant. The alloy’s specific properties, such as conductivity and resistance to corrosion, have also been assessed. This study confirms that the CuAl10Fe5Ni5 alloy processed by L-PBF is a good candidate for component replacements within the railway catenary parts sector, offering a sustainable and efficient solution for future infrastructure maintenance.
