Luca Patriarca

Luca Patriarca currently serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano since 2022. In 2013, he earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on the Experimental Characterization of Microstructural Deformation Mechanisms for EBM-TiAl and FeCr alloys. From 2014 to 2015, Luca Patriarca held a post-doctoral Research Associate position at the University of Illinois, collaborating with Professor H. Sehitoglu in the domain of functional optimization of shape memory alloys for high-temperature applications. Subsequently, in 2016, he assumed the role of a Junior Fixed-Term Researcher (RTDA) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. With authorship of approximately 60 scientific publications and responsibilities related to various research projects and contracts, his recent research activities have centered on the development of design criteria rooted in damage tolerance for additively-manufactured metallic alloys. Particular emphasis has been placed on understanding the influence of material microstructure on the fatigue life of mechanical components, spanning a diverse range of materials, including TiAl, Al-based alloys, Ti6Al4V alloy, CrCo, NiTi shape memory alloys, and new high-entropy alloys, as well as Ni-based alloys for high-temperature applications. His research endeavors are closely intertwined with experimental analyses, encompassing material testing for mechanical behavior characterization, microstructural assessment through EBSD, microscopy, and the utilization of the Digital Image Correlation technique. Within the sphere of teaching, he assumes instructional responsibilities for courses in Machine Design and Modelling the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, both of which are offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.
