9 - Powder Bed Absorptivity in LPBF Additive Manufacturing: Exploring the Interplay of Powder Characteristics, Recoating parameters and Substrate Effects

Abstract

In the LPBF additive manufacturing process, laser/material interactions depend in particular on powder parameters (morphology, distribution, powder bed spread, etc.) and laser parameters (wavelength, power, etc.). Our study of the influence of these parameters is focused on absorptivity measurements using validated integrating spheres. The tests are based on an instrumented bench that allows us to vary the spread of the powder bed and to work with several wavelengths (IR and blue in particular) and different powders (Cu, Al, steel). The influence of the substrate on absorptivity is also studied. Absorbance results for different laser/material combinations will be presented and compared with those available in the literature. Critical aspects of spreading parameters on their influence on powder bed quality is discussed. An overview for the real-time evaluation capabilities of powder bed quality during additive manufacturing are proposed to facilitate in operando evaluations with scan-head devices and model prediction tools.
