3 - Microstructure control during wire and arc additive manufacturing

Abstract

The formation of large collumnar grains and porosity are two critical aspects that hinder further industrial adoption of wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Thus, there is a need to develop process variants that can: i) control and tune the solidification microstructure; and/or ii) decrease the likelyhood for defect formation during WAAM. This talk will detail recent avances in microstructure and defect control during WAAM. A combination of advanced microstructure characterization and mechanical characterization is further used to elucidate the role the new process variants for WAAM.
