Sander Grønnerød

Biography

Sander Grønnerød is a 27 year old Norwegian researcher working for SINTEF Industry, in their department of manufacturing. He works in a group that specializes on additive processes, including DED-LB, DED-arc and PBF-LB. With a background in metallurgy, and an interest in heat transfer, Sander works with tasks that are closely related to process monitoring, characterization and quality assurance of additively manufactured metallic parts. Sander has high activity in both international and national research projects, including ALABAMA, UPBEAT and SmartSirk. In addition, he recently acquired the role as coordinator in Horizon Europe project GEAR-UP.

72 In-situ characterisation of melt pool temperature in a commercial PBF-LB system

This paper provides a general methodology for calculating temperatures based on recorded measurements from a commercial melt pool monitoring system with accompanying data processing and visualization. A case is presented for Ti-6Al-4V processed by laser-based powder bed fusion. The results provide temperatures that closely match literature values and demonstrate the expected higher temperatures in thinner regions, coinciding with decreased conduction and shorter scan meanders of the laser path. Overall, the method and application suggest a promising outlook for the use of such melt pool monitoring systems in part validation to ensure safety and performance of produced components.
