45 Enabling Next-Generation Compact Heat Exchangers through L-PBF of Thin-Walled 316L Structures

This study investigates the development of thinwalled 316L stainless steel structures produced L-PBF for high-compactness heat exchanger applications. Optimized process parameters yielded dense (>99.94%) and homogeneous microstructures, consistent between bulk and
thin-wall regions. Mechanical and thermal properties were assessed and compared to conventionally manufactured 316L, confirming process reliability. Functional prototypes featuring 300 µm-thick walls were tested, achieving a 2000 W exchange power without failure in operating conditions.
