33 L-PBF manufacturing of Al10SiMg alloy using spatial beam shaping

The use of near top-hat (T) and Donut (D) beam shapes in comparison with a classical Gaussian (G) distribution was evaluated on an Al10SiMg aluminum alloy built with the L-PBF process. Shallower melt-pools were formed with both T and D beam shapes, which enhanced the <001> //BD texture and increased the intercell distance, but also surprisingly increased the number of spatters. Tiny mechanical modifications were observed, but the beam shaping was shown to allow larger build rates, due to a small variation of fusion widths/depths at high scan speeds.
