109 Multi-laser Directed Energy Deposition system with integrated formation control for microstructure optimization

Metal additive manufacturing offers a degree of design freedom not possible with conventional manufacturing. Directed energy deposition, as one of these technologies, can produce near-net shape large parts with good deposition rates. However, selecting a single set of robust process parameters may not be ideal for complex geometries. Here we present an adaptable architecture for multi-laser control in one such system, designed to adjust laser positions during the process. Results on Ti-6Al-4V, indicate a potential in tailoring microstructures during the process. Overall, this study showcases a developed system and demonstrates the possibility of achieving improved microstructures in the as-fabricated material through multi-laser control in DED.
